I'm a voracious and omnivorous reader--everything from biographies to Booker Prize winners to mysteries, thrillers, and yeah, anything to do with vampires. (My parents let me watch too many Hammer horror films when I was a kid.)
Oddly enough for a romance writer, I quit reading romance novels some time in my twenties. Though I'd spent many hours glued to their pages, I'd had enough of pirates and lords and ladies (which seemed to be the only romances available in the 80's, though I do love historicals again). But all along, the books and themes that gripped me most were those featuring love stories, whether twisted (The Silence of the Lambs, Interview with the Vampire), tragic (The English Patient), or delightfully witty (Pride and Prejudice).
During my teen years, I spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours happily and obsessively scribbling down romances for myself, my sisters, and our friends. Most of them featured rock star heroes (think Duran Duran, INXS, and the like--I loved my MTV!).
In college, I majored in creative writing, and what do you know? Most of my stories featured a romance at their center or at least a love story of sorts. Not all of them ended happily. And some of them were quite dark.
Today, my bookshelves are again filled with romances of all stripes. I like dark, gritty books with tortured heroes and anti-heroes. I also love paranormals (yes, the vampires again!). While I've considered writing paranormal, I haven't yet hit upon a cool idea or a unique twist that compels me to write it. But I knew I wanted to write dark, and romantic suspense is a good place to do that. So here I am!
Some of my favorite authors: Larissa Ione, J.R. Ward, Emma Holly, Anne Rice, Harlen Coben, Jeff Lindsay, Chelsea Cain, Thomas Harris, Stieg Larsson, Laurell K. Hamilton, Trish McCallan, Kristine Cayne, Diana Layne, David Wailing, Greg Iles, Cody McFadyen
